Strong start for FC Bayern in Champions League

FC Bayern Munich started their Champions League campaign on the right foot with a 3-0 win over Greek champs Olympiacos. They followed that up with their fifth-straight win in the Bundesliga.

After the international break that saw several FC Bayern Munich players suiting up for their respective national teams, the squad came back focused and ready to play in their first group stage match of the Champions League.

Head coach Pep Guardiola’s men started their Champions League campaign on the road against Olympiacos and won 3-0. While the score indicated an easy win for the Bavarians, Olympiacos proved to be a challenging opponent.

“The first Champions League match in the group stage is always tough,” said Guardiola. “Olympiacos hadn’t lost since April and won their last six Champions League matches at home.”

Captain Philipp Lahm said the match in Piraeus, which was FC Bayern’s 200th in the Champions League, was an exhilarating way to kick of the European club competition.

“The atmosphere was a dream, just fantastic,” Lahm said. “You really enjoy your football when it’s like that.”

Thomas Müller scored two goals in Bayern’s win, including a penalty in injury time. Bayern’s other goal came from Mario Götze.

Bundesliga perfection

Domestically, Bayern have continued their dominance as well, winning 3-0 over the weekend away against Darmstadt to maintain their perfect Bundesliga record.

Bayern were expected to dominate the match against one of the Bundesliga’s promoted sides from last season, and Guardiola used the opportunity to rest some of his regular players. Philipp Lahm, Thomas Müller, Robert Lewandowski, Xabi Alonso and Thiago all had the day off, but that gave other players a chance to shine.

Joshua Kimmich enjoyed his Bundesliga debut for Bayern and didn’t disappoint, and Javi Martínez made his first appearance of the season after a long period of injury recovery.

Bayern sit currently second in the Bundesliga, even on points with table leaders Dortmund but lagging just behind in goal difference. Each side had five wins.

In the Champions League, the win against Olympiacos moved Bayern to the top of Group F. Dinamo Zagreb’s surprise win against Arsenal means Bayern have a slight edge against the group’s other powerhouse from London. Bayern’s next match is at home against Dinamo on September 29.
